"I'm taking a very unique approach to teaching piano. Rather than spending a lot of time on exercises, theory, or technique - we start right off by learning some beautiful songs." - Hugh Sung

Coming soon to the ArtistWorks Music Campus: piano lessons from one of the world's most accomplished pianists, Hugh Sung. Trained as a classical pianist, Hung Sung studied at the Curtis Institute of Music where he was also on the faculty for 19 years.

With a new series of online piano lessons at ArtistWorks, Hugh is now taking a very unique approach to teaching piano.

You can hear it in the quality and feel it in your throat when it happens. The muscles tense and pull, your tone gets kind of pinched, pitchy and shrill. And if your voice doesn’t break you can consider yourself lucky.

Perhaps you only experience strain on certain occasions. You might think it’s because you weren’t born to sing in certain keys or just have a naturally low voice or the song is wrong for you (even though you love it).

And it’s true; you can lower the key or simply cut out certain songs from your repertoire. But, there is a hidden reason why you may find yourself straining. Not knowing what it is makes it easy to blame it on other things. That, not being the real reason, keeps the solution illusive and at arm’s length. So, are you ready for the unveiling of the guilty party?

What is Strain?

Your audience may think it’s magic, but anyone who achieves outstanding performances has worked hard to do so. What is the key to this success? Through my own development as a veteran performer, as well as by helping countless singers and bands achieve success on stage and in the studio, I’ve been able to develop these tips to help your rehearsals result in “Wow” performances.rehersal tips for powerful performances

1. Envision your message. Sometimes referred to as “the whole package” or “branding,” the overall image, sound and message of a band or solo performer should be established early on. The better you can define your general message and image the more focused your activities will be. This vision of your “product” acts as the criteria for every detail of your music, arrangements, set list, staging, outfts, etc. This is your musical presentation, persona and unique identity. As your career develops, so may your vision and everything realigns to harmonize with it.

wimn interview with jeannie deva"The Deva Method provides a singer with vocal freedom. This includes the ability to sing the styles of your own choosing and to sing the way YOU want to sing. It does not make you sound the way the teacher or the technique wants you to sound. It opens the doors of expressive, passionate singing."

- Jeannie Deva

Jeannie was recently interviewed by the Women's International Music Network (WiMN) for their weekly column Front and Center. She talks about how she got into singing and vocal coaching, her unique vocal method, advice for singers and more.

Wanted to share a few things that I've been up to recently.

After our press conference at NAMM 2014 jamming with my fellow ArtistWorks teachers: the Amazing Howard Levy on Harmonica and Rock Guitar Wizard Paul Gilbert, Paul brought me into his Los Angeles, California recording studio to sing vocals on the title cut of his upcoming album. That was a real treat.

Then one of my star clients Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman) came to LA while on her spring tour of the US. She gave a fantastic performance in Hollywood, and here we are in her dressing room after the show.

jeannie deva - when singing stops being funJeannie Deva has a new blog on MusicConnection.com where she talks about how to break out of a rut when singing stops being fun.

"If you are enjoying it more, keep doing what you are doing, as it is obviously successful. If you are enjoying it less, or find yourself fluctuating, it’s time to change something; and I don’t mean that the answer is to stop singing."

how to sing better - paul gilbert with jeannie deva

[Photo Credit Peter Hodgson of I Heart Guitar]

One of the benefits to being an ArtistWorks instructor is that you're connected to an elite roster of experts in their respective genres. While Paul Gilbert is the master when it comes to rock guitar, Jeannie Deva is the master when it comes to learning how to sing better. The two instructors met each other recently at NAMM and hit it off, so much so that Paul ended up scheduling a session with Jeannie. We caught up with Paul afterwards to see how it went:

ArtistWorks: What inspired you to seek out a vocal lesson?

Paul Gilbert: Jeannie and I did some jamming together at the NAMM show, and her singing was amazing. She is a master of her instrument, and also a great teacher… I have seen some of her ArtistWorks vocal lessons, and I wondered what kind of doors she could open for my own singing.
