New Podcast: Craig & Sarah - Building Your Practice Roadmap

In this week’s episode of the ArtistWorks Music Series podcast, ArtistWorks CEO Patricia Butler sits down with world-renowned ukulele players and ArtistWorks instructors Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel to discuss the concept of building a practice roadmap, and the best approaches to making your practice time efficient, successful, and fun! The show is available wherever you listen to podcasts, or you can listen here at ArtistWorks.

To become a master musician, you have to be committed to being a lifelong student. Music’s beauty lies in the fact that the artistic journey is unending. Room for growth and improvement is always present whether you’re a seasoned professional or you’re picking up an instrument for the first time. As a result, dedicating time to practice is critical for musicians of all levels.

Craig and Sarah’s fundamental philosophy behind practicing, and lifelong growth on the ukulele, is founded in setting small, reachable goals and building upon those goals with each practice session.

“Breaking down your practice session into the finer points is always going to make your overall practice sessions more successful,” Sarah explains. “We find that if you really break things down, you’ll have a much higher rate of success than trying to work on multiple skills at once.”

Craig and Sarah outline why establishing small, focused, and attainable goals is critical for success. It creates stepping stones for improvement and boosts morale and confidence as you succeed at reaching those goals. However, they also express the importance of crafting a long-term vision for your musical journey.

“Typically, Sarah and I love to set long-term goals and then we have a bunch of short-term goals that we can do even on a day-to-day basis to help us reach the larger goal,” Craig explains. “Having little successes is so important to drive you and have an inspired session where you do feel accomplished.”
