Mike Marshall Remembers Doc Watson

Our dear friend mandolinist/teacher John McGann passed away

The mandolin cummunity has lost one of it's great teachers, performers,

publishers and dear friends.

John McGann, professor of mandolin at the Berkelee College of Music passed

away last week suddenly of complications with his kidneys.

He was a good friend of mine and he helped many students learn the mandolin

during his tenure at Berklee. He also led various ensembles at the school

featuring many instruments and in a variety of styles. His recordings are a delight.

Caterina will perform the Vivaldi Mandolin Concerto in C Maj. on Baroque Mandolin and Mike will perform his Concerto #1 in G Maj. for mandolin and string orchestra with Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg and the New Century Orchestra. Four Concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as one open rehearsal Wed. Feb 29th: Open Rehearsal Herbst Theatre, San Francisco 10am Thurs. Yoshie's Jazz Club 510 Embarcadero West Jack London Square Oakland, CA, U.S.A. 94607 Then on Sunday Jan 15th we do it all again at the Napa Opera House!!

Sat in with the Dawg last night at the Freight in Berkeley

Had a nice time playing with David Grisman last night at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. His Bluegrass Band was there singing and picking Trad. We played Fanny Hill and Bill Monroe's tune My Last Days on Earth a real cool tune he wrote late in his live in an altered tuning. GG DD AC DF Low to high. He sounded like only the Dawg can and his band is of course kicking it these days. MM
