wagon wheel solos

a new lesson is here!... in the Greeting video.

In the first week of 2012, I got a couple of requests for the tune "Wagon Wheel", or at least the fiddle part, so I now have put that tune up for you all.

The lesson is actually in the "greeting" video, so just click on that.

I just finished transcribing the 3 fiddle solos on that, plus a bonus "bluegrass" style solo written by myself.

Fish Wrist! Darol picks and talks with fiddler Brian Wicklund

Darol talks and jams with the most excellent fiddler-educator Brian Wicklund,of FiddlePal Productions, and author of the American Fiddle Method, one of the first and best-organized instruction books for fiddling. We discuss his musical and teaching ideas, both in words and notes!

International Bluegrass Music Corn-vention!

what a big weekend for Bluegrass music! The IBMA Convention in Nashville last week was even more amazing than usual, with the awards night held in the historic Ryman Auditorium celebrating Bill Monroe's 100th birthday this year. Lots of great picking and singing and yakking and hanging out could make a person kinda tired but we press on, with renewed inspiration, drive, and tone.

Darol interviews Republic Of Strings fiddler Lauren Rioux

The latest "other" fiddle player in Darol's long-running ensemble Republic Of Strings is Maine's Lauren Rioux. A well-known teacher and pioneer 5-string fiddle player, Lauren took a degree in Music Education at an early age and discovered fiddling 8 years ago at a string teachers' conference in Ohio. She has become a sort of Poster Girl for the possibilty of acquiring new styles on the violin. She teaches at her private studio, tours with R.O.S.

Coming Soon: More cool interviews!

coming: A rich and interesting series on building, repair and maintenance of the fiddle with the acclaimed luthier Jonathan Cooper, all coming up here on the Fiddle School. Don't forget to check out Darol's wild performance of the bluegrass sine quo non Lee Highway Blues with none other than the greatest Bluegrass fiddler alive, Stuart Duncan! Click on "Performances and More" to find this amazing performance.

Brittany Haas Interview!

Talking and playing with one of the greatest rhythmic fiddlers ever.We fiddlers now have a great interview with the incredible Brittany Haas, alumna of Republic Of Strings and current driving fierce in the phenomenal band Crooked Still. Brittany is one of the world's most rhythmic and accurate fiddlers, and her approach to bowing has to be seen to be believed.

July 9th String Explosion was a hit at Berkeley's Freight & Salvage.

This event, at one of the greatest acoustic venues in the world, was organized by two of the most influential young string players in the country: Tristan and Tashina Clarridge.

All styles: Darol Agrees

Of course this goes for the Fiddle School also. I've played professionally in a lot of styles, and have been fortunate enough to play with many of the greatest fiddlers in just about every style. So if you have a question about any technique or fiddle style, if I don't know the answer, I can call somebody who does, and get it in here or even do an interview. New interviews coming up will focus on Old-Time Bowing techniques, basic bow holds, jazz and Celtic style details, instrument maintenance and much more. Thanks! Remember this is YOUR school! -Darol
