Dinner with The DiMarzios

I had a great time on Saturday night having dinner with Larry DiMarzio and his wife Gina. Also at the dinner were Steve Vai, Richie Kotzen, and Billy Sheehan. We talked, and laughed, and ate, and ate, and ate. Larry DiMarzio knows pickups, and he knows Italian food. I'm glad to know him! (and Steve, Richie, and Billy as well!) Now, I'm going to go play some notes through my Air Classics...

Rock and Roll!

Meeting Randy Rhoads

I grew up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania... a small town, where a visit from a famous musician was a rare event. But on Feb. 2nd, 1982, Randy Rhoads came for a whole day of guitar clinics at a music store in Greensburg. Of course I went to one of the clinics, and the photo above was taken when I was standing in line (upper left, in the photo) and waiting to get an autograph from Randy.

NAMM Saturday

The NAMM show is a great place to see friends from the music business. Today I saw Steve Morse, Allan Holdsworth, Uli Roth, and Nuno Bettencourt. I stopped by the Ernie Ball Booth to sign autographs, visited Ibanez to see my new guitar again, went to Larry DiMarzio's hotel suite to escape the din of NAMM for a few minutes, and then jumped back into the chaos to do some jamming with my fellow Artistworks teachers, Jeannie Deva and Howard Levy.

NAMM Friday

NAMM Thursday

Here I am at the Marshall booth, hanging out with Juan Alderete, bassist from The Mars Volta. I know Juan better as John Alderete from Racer X. (Check out John/Juan's Racer X baseball cap!)

There are a lot of new students this month, so I want to make sure that everyone is enjoying all the features of the site, and just say HELLO!

I'm planning to be in CHAT on Monday at 3pm (Pacific Time Zone.)

So I hope to chat with you then, to give you some ideas about how to use the site, and of course, I can answer any questions that you have at that time as well.

Chat with you then!

Thank you,

Paul

The G4 Experience

The last time that I saw Joe Satriani was at the Marshall Amps 50th Anniversary Concert. We shared a backstage room, and I took the opportunity to ask him lots of questions about his guitar playing, influences, writing, and music in general.

Day Tripper - Eleven Amazing Notes!

day tripper beatlesThe intro to the Beatles' "Day Tripper" is certainly one of the most recognizable 11-note guitar riffs ever written.

I'm sure everyone has heard the Beatles' version, but have you heard these versions? More after the break!

Jimi Hendrix, "Day Tripper":

The Japanese Beetle

ibanez japanese beetleI was looking through my guitar collection last week, and I found this interesting instrument. It was built by the Ibanez custom shop around 1996. I played it in the video for the song "Stay Together" by Mr. Big. Since we were just miming for the camera, I didn't need to actually play, so I turned the guitar around and did the whole video left-handed.

Let's count the Beatle similarities going on here:

* Paul McCartney and I share the same first name.

* Paul McCartney plays a violin-shaped bass left-handed. I'm playing a violin-shaped guitar left-handed.

* The early Beatles wore suits. Everyone in Mr. Big is wearing a suit.

* Paul McCartney was in The Beatles. My guitar is a Japanese "Beetle."

* Cheap Trick borrowed the chord progression from The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" for their song "Come On, Come On." I borrowed the chords from "Come On, Come On" for my song, "Stay Together."

* Paul McCartney wrote the song, "Yesterday." I wrote the song, "Technical Difficulties." Oh well, the similarities have to end somewhere.
